"In an old house in Paris, that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... the smallest one was Madeline." With these 24-words--author, illustrator and gourmet, Ludwig Bemelmans, started each of his book in his Madeline series. Ludwig Belmelmans died in 1962, but his books have remained popular with generations of girls, and his murals continue to glorify the walls of Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side. Bemelmans set his Madeline stories in and around Rue St.-Dominique in the 7th arrondissement...an area of chic shops, cafes, flower stalls and markets that intersects with the 'foodie street' Rue Cler. I love Madeline because in or out of trouble she's a spunky, lovable character who believes in herself and has a penchant for adventure. Click HERE.
